Mental disorders are therefore by no means limited to a small group of predisposed individuals but are a major public health problem with marked consequences for society. Overall, more than 50% of the general population in middle‐ and high‐income countries will suffer from at least one mental disorder at some point in their lives. In the EU, about 165 million people are affected each year by mental disorders, mostly anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders. Results of this study may be used to increase implementation and improve the development of mental health apps with ACT and other therapeutic communities. Suggested criteria for evaluating apps were consistent with the perceived benefits and barriers to use. The greatest barriers to app use included little guidance as to what apps to choose, app contents that are inconsistent with ACT, and ethical concerns related to app use. As rated by participants, the most helpful app functions pertained to supporting out-of-session skills practice and the maintenance of therapy gains.
The survey found that practitioners are interested in using ACT-related apps, but that use of and familiarity with apps is low. The present survey study examined the uses and perceptions of mental health apps among 356 professionals and students familiar with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as indicated by being a member of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. Little is known about uses and perceptions of mental health apps among applied practitioners, nor are agreed-upon criteria for evaluating and choosing apps available. The study emphasises the need to distinguish conceptually and empirically between different forms of work orientation, job content and well-being, and points to the value of incorporating psychological thinking in some sociological research.Īlthough mobile apps have proliferated as self-help or adjunctive therapy supports, scant research has explored their implementation among mental health practitioners. Differences in well-being, job content and work orientations were found primarily in comparison between self-employees and organisational non-managers. However, no between-role differences occurred in respect of supportive job features such as having a comfortable workplace. The presence in self-employment of greater challenge, such as an enhanced requirement for personal innovation, accounted statistically for self-employed professionals’ greater job engagement, and self-employed professionals more strongly valued personal challenge than did professionals employed in an organisation. Self-employment was found to be particularly associated with energised well-being in the form of job engagement.
